It may be narcissistic but . . .

July 21st, 2008

Just completed a wonderful weekend with dear gals . . . thank you for visiting.

How fortunate for me to have friends that encourage intelligent and caring conversation, a love for arts in all forms of expression and just plain wicked fun. In one of the endearing little shops we visited in my lovely San Francisco, Miss Becky found a book which Miss Tasha then informed me we all must buy. I followed orders (I’m no dummy), hardly glancing at the book.

This morning while unpacking my weekend goodies and reflecting on my sweet memories, I came upon this unknown book and it fell open to this page with this amazing quote.

“I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find that I loved just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.” Diane Ackerman

I stopped breathing for a few seconds and savored those few moments when time is suspended. YES, we all think this, but few say it as well.

I have my varying views on blogging. My lack of it lately confirms it. What are the motivations? Narcissism, reflection, journaling, keeping touch with distant family and friends or portrayal of an image or life that is inaccurate? I have not figured out the answer . . . but perhaps it doesn’t matter. It can be whatever it needs to be for the author.

For myself, I’m choosing it to keep a record of my life, the life where I want to fully live it’s width–to share my passions, my dreams, my memories, my movie of life.

It won’t be too personal, nor too frequent–I’m more comfortable with that. But it will be me.

So . . . hello! And if your curious what amazing shops and restaurants we discovered in San Francisco this weekend–stay tuned!

I had to peek in after your text.
I had the same moment - reading the book at the airport last night, start to finish, and just reveling in all of it, life and friends and family and getting on with it. Living.
Thanks for the weekend of weekends! Love you!

Hi! Thank you again for the AMAZING quilt and to Sophie for the burp cloths!!! I loved your blog, you are such a good writer. Just a couple more weeks until we see you!! Your 5th paragraph says it all. Mine would end up being the portrayal of a life that’s inaccurate. I sometimes seem to sugarcoat for some odd reason! Then I wonder why the hell I did it! HA!!

Oh, and I forgot to say that Addison is doing wonderful and of course is adorable. She will be 5 weeks on Thursday already! Your weekend looks like it was so great and I can’t wait to go kick it with some of my gals probably next YEAR!

So fun that your friends came to visit, it sounds like they are wonderful girls and that you had a wonderful weekend :) I love blogging. I love that all of my family that is so far away can see what my children and our family are doing, interested in and that I have a written record of our memories. I’m excited to make a book out of my blog for a hard copy of it as well. And it is just too fun to keep in touch with friends this way too. I love it. And your posts are always so cute, I definitely love reading them :)

I think what ever the “it” of your blogging is, it has to be accurate and it has to be you. Its completely narcissistic, typing our thoughts, some of them innermost, into cyberspace, for all or few to see, and assuming they want such a window. For worse or better, I love it, and I love when you do!

It was a great weekend, I am so glad we got together, and I can’t wait to discuss the book!

I am always up for updates no matter how few and far between. Good to see you gals had a wonderful getaway. I am just sad to see you weren’t in the photo with them! Can’t wait to hear about your adventures!

so glad you blogged this post. i have had many conversations with many different people regarding the motives behind blogging. . .i think my motives are a combintation of all you listed above and more. for better or worse, whether or not it’s 100% genuine and accurate, my blog shows a part of who i am. it may not chronicle everything but it chronicles what i want to remember and for that reason i blog.

About time miss Amy! What a treat-a weekend with Rebecca and Tasha. As for the wonderful world of blogging, well it should be what you want it to be. Mine tends to include too many details and tips the scales to the good in my life. Not an accurate picture of the whole but still very real to me. And that is who my blog is for-me. Glad your back. You have a knack for finding treasures wherever you live. I’ll be staying tuned!

I’m still on cloud nine from the lovely weekend. I cannot thank you enough for being such a fantastic hostess. I too have been browsing the book and love that for the weekend we were able to live in all directions. It really was lovely.

I love the thought of shopping with friends and all of us buying the same book. I haven’t seen that book before, but it looks like one I should check into.

You gals must have had a great time together. I look forward to reading future posts about it.

Your thoughts on blogging are interesting. There are so many variations among all the different blogs I read, but my favorites seem to involve capturing life moments in an entertaining way. My blog has become my family’s journal as told by me, and my daily documentation of my life. It has evolved over the 2.5 years I’ve been working on it, and I love knowing I have all of these days, thoughts, photos, feelings, frustrations, and testimonies captured.

Another wonderful girls’ weekend! You are a lucky woman! I haven’t met Rebecca yet, but I sure do love those other two. I also love the thought of shopping together and all buying the same book. Loved your thoughts on blogging as well. And I can’t wait to hear more about your San Francisco haunts! I’ve only been there once (this year) and I love that city.
